Blog Value: You are NOT Your Google Rank

For those who have paid attention there is a button for Fuel My Blog on the main page of this blog. It’s a community I joined but admit I haven’t participated in as much as I could – mainly because I am always so pressed for hours in a day which is hardly an original excuse. Lately, the community page has been publishing pieces by bloggers on what makes a successful blogger and blog. Today I read an interesting post about what defines an established blog/blogger and what it takes to be successful.

Unsurprisingly one’s Google Rank or Technorati rating is not what really counts, although those of us in competition for advertisers and writing gigs could make valid points that beg to differ.

Value is not intrinsic in what amounts to a blog’s ability to generate traffic and revenue for the commercial end of life. Value is what a blog/blogger means to the people who read and relate and find meaning from one’s content.

I can prove my blog’s potential value with stats:

-two years of existence in one form or another

-519 posts

-90+ readers a day (give or take)

-a Google and a Technorati rank (feel free to look it up if it matters to you)

But does this mean this blog has value? Or that I am valuable? Would it matter if I packed up shop tomorrow?

Much harder to prove that one has value in a deeper sense.

  1. Just popped over from FMB after reading your comment on ‘bloggers block’. I do like an honest answer – “Mostly though, I just love to talk about myself – am important quality for a blogger/writer:)”. Of course, this is complete rubbish – I’ve just been looking at my backwards catalogue and …… hang on ……. you’re right!!!! I suppose that’s why memes are really me me me me mes .. tee hee

  2. started my blog for myself, and was delighted by the “community” that magically happened… a bonus! your blog has value – clearly to you, but also to readers… you have managed to pull out many buried “nuggets” from my addled brain. much better “out than in”, so thank you! hope you keep writing!

  3. Sylvie, you make good points. The blog began as a personal thing and despite my turn towards writing, it remains mostly so.

Silver, success is personal, you’re right. Thanks for the link back.

  4. Hi Annie, I think a blog has value if the author sees value in having a blog in the first place. A blog is a projection of oneself an added instrument to show what we are about, what we have to say or what we can write, paint whatever…
I value my blog not by the number of hits and google rank but simply as my personal project, I value the comments and interaction I get from the blog, I value the creativity of having a blog.I would really miss not having a blog I think I know what your answer would be too. Glad you joined Fuel 😉

  5. I have about 10% of those posts, and maybe 5 or 6 constant readers, and I think that’s pretty special considering I started this in April. It’s all in how you define success.
