Better to Let Horses Condemn Themselves

Ever hear the saying “From the horse’s mouth”? For a while now the media has been insisting that it’s treatment of the Democratic presidential candidates has been not only fair and balanced but that they have in no way played the gender card against Sen. Clinton. In fact, they go on, sexism just really doesn’t play into politics – or even out in the day to day lives of ordinary people – anymore. We are a gender blind nation of equals, baby.

The truth is something different and frankly for me this goes far beyond the current political campaign. How do you raise daughters in a such a chilly emotional climate? When these are the messages that are being hurled at us by the media? How does a young female (or an old one even) learn to be proud of who they are when everything about their biology is considered fair game for ridicule by people who should know better?

  1. I did notice the preponderance of Fox news talking heads, and I guess I would’ve expected as much. However, even so, I was surprised at how much blatant sexism is even spoken aloud these days; I suppose that’s better than subtle. At least you know what you’re dealing with. But sheesh…it’s really a shame about their penises. If they didn’t feel so damn inadequate, they wouldn’t have to put women down.

Oh, gosh, was that sexist? I’m sure I was taken out of context.

  2. I don’t know. I call BS a lot. And set a radical female example. Do what I can to make their esteem independent of stupidity, although I know that’s not truly possible, but it can mitigate long term damage.

Because BWAHAHAHAHA talk about self-deluded…right, fair and equal society. Okey dokey. I’ll use that next time a mechanic patronizes me.

  3. I agree that women have not helped our own cause and sometimes make things worse for ourselves. When Obama gets the nom, the Clinton supporters need to step up right away and show they are ready to support him because it is ultimately about getting a Democrat in the Whitehouse, regardless. Talk in both camps of voters about being unable to support the one who gets the nom because he/she was not their choice is the worst kind of childishness.

The trouble with the faux news and entertainment tv in general is that we watch it. And we fuel it by our participation.

I am just 44. Don’t recall the 1960’s much. But I remember the 70’s and the 80’s and in some ways it was worse. In other ways nothing has changed. Women are still not able to work together for our own good and we willingly allow ourselves to objects rather than people. The fact that we can sell ourselves doesn’t remove the pimping stigma.

We are half the population and we don’t support women who try to go into politics. We buy into the stereotypes that are fed us by a male-dominated society without questioning. Why? Nature or nurture?

  4. Please note that most of these talking heads are on the Faux News Network. Not that other news media aren’t saying the same thing. And saying equally ridiculous things about Barack Obama. I wish we had a parlimentary system where our campaigns only lasted a couple of months. I am having campaign fatigue already.
Women have it considerably better than when I came of age 40 years ago. That we can even consider having a female presidential candidate is miraculous. It’s not perfect, as the video shows, and until we women stop playing their games, we will have to put up with this stuff.
